Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2003

March 9, 2008

Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2003 (“the Montepulciano with the grape vine tied to the bottle”), popped and poured this staple of Chez WineMad. Light, fruity, not sweet… About $11 at the local Joe Canal’s, who always seems to have this wine in stock and on sale. Very good QPR.

Enjoyed the wine this rain-soaked day with a lunch of spaghetti and sauce with Italian hot and sweet sausages. Yumm!

2005 Codice Vino de la Terra de Castilla

Popped and poured this inexpensive Tempranillo, a bit closed at first but opened up quickly to cherries and strawberries on the palate.  Less than $10, excellent QPR.

Marietta Old Vine Red Lot 43 and a movie

February 21, 2008

Marietta Old Vine Red Lot 43, popped and poured, good weekday quaff, very good QPR @ $12, dense fruit, prunes, seems sweet on first taste but drier finish.

Watched “The History Boys” while drinking this, pretty good flick. The presence of the estimable character actor Richard Griffiths, of one of WineMad’s favorite movies, the black comedy “Withnail and I“, made it worthwhile, recommended.

February 2, 2008

Note to self: seek out some Shiraz Petit Verdot (click here for reviews with tasting notes). This based on a review, Camden Park Shiraz Petit Verdot – (2/2/2008), that popped up on

LoveThatWine labeled it a Really bold red, which suits WineMad well.

2006 Yalumba Shiraz Viognier South Australia Y Series

January 31, 2008

Yalumba Shiraz-Viognier South Australia The Y Series 2006, 88pts, WS

WineMad paid $8.99 @ Joe Canal’s.

Yalumba’s notes: Yalumba Y Series Shiraz Viognier is bright and youthful. The nose is full of spices, licorice and plum fruits with subtle hints of Viognier emphasised by soft jam of fresh purple grape aromas.

The palate is supple, chewy and delicious with sweet vinour fruits and loose-knit tannins. A spicy, savoury and silky wine with a lingering finish.

WineMad’s review: spicy nose, dark berry, peppery, dark fruits on the palate, medium finish. Excellent QPR. Recommended.

Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines 2006

January 29, 2008

Picked up a bottle of Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines 2006 for $7.50, popped and poured… Wow! Delicious, with a great QPR… Cherry, berries, bright, touch of vanilla on the palate, some mint and smoke on the nose, will stock up on a few more of these as a weekday drink. Recommended.

Elio Altare, Dolcetto d’Alba 2006

January 28, 2008

Elio Altare, Dolcetto d’Alba 2006 with tortellini and pesto.

WineMad‘s first Dolcetto, from the venerable barolo producer, Elio Altare. Tasting notes: on first sniff, notes of children’s vitamins! Decanted. Nose evolved quite a lot over a few hours. Fruity and pleasant with some depth, good QPR.
